Mount Cook Helicopter: Weather and Cancellations
What the weather does to Mount Cook helicopter and ski plane flights and the Tasman Glacier heli hike: when the call is made, what each booking refunds, downgrades and reschedules, and snow in summer.
Weather decides every flight at Aoraki / Mount Cook, and each operator makes its own call on the day; INFLITE Mt Cook Ski Planes & Helicopters makes its final decisions “anytime from early morning up to approximately 10 minutes before departure”. What you get back depends on the trip you book. Mt Cook Glacier Guiding’s Tasman Glacier heli hike, from US$552 a person (checked November 2026), gives a full refund for the affected booking if weather prevents the trip. Book your first day there and keep the next one free.
Pick the earliest date you will be at Aoraki / Mount Cook. You can cancel free until 24 hours before.
How the call is made

On the day, and late. INFLITE Mt Cook Ski Planes & Helicopters aims to warn you the day before if conditions look likely to affect your flight, but final decisions come on the day, up to about 10 minutes before departure. The other listings make every trip subject to the weather and, for most of the helicopter flights, to a minimum number of passengers.
The mountains add their own risks. The Department of Conservation notes that avalanches can occur in Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park in any season, and that road access may be limited from June to September by snowfall (checked November 2026).
What each booking pays back

Each listing words its terms differently:
- Mt Cook Glacier Guiding's heli hike: weather dependent; if weather prevents the trip from operating, a full refund for the affected booking.
- The Helicopter Line Mount Cook's heli hike: subject to favourable weather and minimum passenger numbers; if cancelled, an alternative date or a full refund.
- INFLITE's 25-minute flight: if the weather cancels it, a new tour within 30 minutes or a full refund. If the operator moves your flight time and you cannot make the new one, a full refund.
- INFLITE's ski plane and helicopter flight: refundable if cancelled for weather, and INFLITE does its best to reschedule; if you are rebooked because of the aircraft’s weight limits, a full refund.
- Glacier Helicopters' flights: an alternative date or a full refund for poor weather, and the same if too few passengers book.
- The Helicopter Line's 55-minute flight on Viator: an alternative date or a full refund if cancelled for poor weather.
Every GetYourGuide trip here can also be cancelled free by you until 24 hours before.
Booked direct, the operators’ own terms apply instead. INFLITE Mt Cook Ski Planes & Helicopters refunds in full when you cancel at least 48 hours before check-in, and when it cancels for unsuitable flying conditions offers a full refund or a reschedule at no extra cost. Alpine Guides, which guides The Helicopter Line’s heli hike, does not charge you if bad weather stops the trip (checked November 2026).
Downgrades, delays and reschedules
A flight that goes ahead can still change. The reviews show how:
- The ski plane and helicopter flight. Of its 350 most recent reviews, 38 mention weather or a cancellation. Among them: a combo flown as a ski plane only, without a landing, with a partial refund (May 2025); a 45-minute combo replaced by a 20-minute helicopter flight with a mountain landing on a clear day (December 2023); a two-day wait for a reschedule that ended in a ski plane flight without a landing (May 2026); and a 5-hour drive to a flight cancelled by a text that arrived out of signal range (December 2025).
- The 25-minute flight. One August 2025 reviewer had a landing of “a mere two seconds” in strong wind; two, in March 2024 and April 2025, found no snow at the landing site.
- The Helicopter Line’s heli hike. Of its 270 reviews, 8 mention a cancellation, one of them called off 10 minutes before departure for wind (December 2024).
- Mt Cook Glacier Guiding’s heli hike. Of its 344 reviews, 7 mention a cancellation.
Snow on the landing in summer
An alpine landing is on a mountain site, and on INFLITE’s 25-minute flight snow cannot be guaranteed all year round because of a lack of snowfall in summer. A glacier landing, as on the ski plane flights, lands on snow and ice that lie all year. If snow underfoot is the point of your trip and you are travelling in summer, book a glacier landing; ski plane or helicopter explains the difference.
Where to look on the day
- Your booking. The final word is the operator’s, by message or at check-in; keep your phone on and within signal.
- The forecast. MetService’s Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park forecast, the one the Department of Conservation links, and its Mount Cook forecast for the village.
- The park. The Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park Visitor Centre, 1 Larch Grove, for track and road conditions.
